Sewing and Chickpea Avocado Salad

So, obviously this post is late. It's really late. But, urgent (sewing) took the place of important (writing).

Meres is going to be the flower girl in her uncle's wedding next Saturday. I've known this fact since May. I've also known since May that I'd have to make her dress. But, summer happened. And sewing didn't fit into my laid back jive.

Also, I'm not a procrastinator. Not generally. Only with stuff that I think it going to cause me stress. Which it did. But, then again, so did the anticipation.

I love sewing. And, normally it goes very smoothly. I've sewn for years, and would not consider myself an amateur. But, I've made clothes from fancy-schmancy material once, and only once, before. It is a whole different beast. Which makes for a whole new level of stress. Difficult fabric used for a dress that is supposed to be gorgeous and flower girl appropriate.

That's stressful. I picked a super easy pattern, and everything went like clockwork until I got to the waist. I had lined the skirt, and the double thickness made the normally easy task of gathers not nearly as easy. The end product is nowhere near perfect, but I'm pretty sure the only person who will notice any issues is me.

I was thinking of just forgoing the zipper and sewing her into the dress next week. But, you'll be happy to know that I put the zipper in this afternoon, and sewed down the lining. So, the dress is done, except for a good pressing.

Yesterday, Meres kept asking me if I was done with her dress. She pulled up her rocking chair right next to me, and was right there in my business. She asked me at one point if she was driving me in Spain? I asked her if she meant driving me insane. Yes. That was her meaning. She actually wasn't. Her flower girl dress, on the other hand, was...

In other news, I ordered our school books this week, and the first box came today. Seriously, for the kids it is as exciting as Christmas morning. I don't get it, but I'm thrilled they are excited.

I am thinking about a post about what we will be studying this year, and how things are going to look. I will probably get it written next week.

We did our second triathlon last Saturday. Neither of us broke the 1 hour mark, but both of us took 2-3 minutes off last year's time. That's a victory in my book.

I am almost done with my second "Ironman" mileage week of the summer. I've completed my swim (2-1/2 miles total) and my biking (115 miles). I still have 8 miles to run. I'm planning to finish it tomorrow morning. I am hoping to do another Ironman week next week, and then maybe one more before school starts.

Well, today's recipe is a salad. It is cool (for summer). And unique.

Chickpea Avocado Salad.

Healthy. Good protein and fat. Some dairy. No gluten.

Chickpea, Avocado, Feta Salad
Prep time: 20 minutes
1-1/2 cups chickpeas aka garbanzo beans, rinsed and drained
2 avocados
1/3 cup chopped parsley
1 green onion
1/3 cup feta cheese
1 lime
salt and pepper

-Peel and dice the avocados. Slice the green onion. Juice the lime.
-Combine all the ingredients in a large bowl and stir gently to combine, making sure not to mash the avocados and feta. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Well, our summer weekend is looking to be hot. And humid. And good.

Have a great weekend!
