And I pray for their safety every.single.day. No falls, no accidents-on the job and to and from the job.
God has graciously protected our crew from all but the most minor injuries. And I thank God for that every day too.
Here is a wonderful Psalm that I have memorized, and then taught to my kids. A psalm of protection. It is a great psalm for roofers...(and everyone else)
Psalm 91
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in Him will I trust.
Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.
He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust:
his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;
Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.
A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.
Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.
Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;
There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.
For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.
They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.
Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him:
I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.
He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble;
I will deliver him, and honour him.
With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.
So, according to Psalm 91, who may depend upon the Lord's promise of protection?
-the one who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
-the one who makes God his refuge, fortress and trust
-the one who makes the Most High God his habitation
-the one who sets his love on God
-the one who knows God's name
-the one who calls upon God
Now, this is not a good luck charm or a talisman against evil. Even Jesus Christ, when tempted by Satan to throw Himself off the temple, (Satan using this very verse to prove his point) said we are not to tempt the Lord our God.
We shouldn't do foolhardy things an expect God's protection. Though He often graciously protects us even when we are foolhardy.
But, this Psalm is a blessed promise to believers. And specifically to those who are only trusting in God.
Not in themselves.
Not in their own machinations.
Not in the government.
Not in possessions.
Not in a college degree.
Not in a good economy.
Not in good health or a strong body.
Not in elbow grease or fortitude.
Only in the Most High God. He has promised His truth to be their shield. His wings to be their hiding place. Their shelter. Himself their refuge from evil. His angels to keep in their ways. Long life, salvation, answers to their calls.
Chaos, destruction, pain, catastrophes, death, plagues, and danger all surround them, but they aren't touched. God is their refuge.
Hmmm...
Again, I don't believe this is a good luck charm. And it absolutely doesn't mean that believer's lives which have been touched by catastrophe weren't trusting God. It doesn't mean that at all. But, I can guarantee that almost every believer can point to some circumstance in their life that God's protection was very evident. If not circumstance after circumstance after circumstance.
Even though sometimes we are surrounded by and engulf in trouble, we have a marvelous final promise..."I will be with him in trouble."
You can take that to the bank.
